Hybrid Graphic Novels for Kids
My 6 year old is an advanced reader, but he consistently turns down any book without plenty of pictures. Graphic novels are a great choice to help kids like him make the transition to chapter books, as they have the visual appeal of picture books but with a more complicated story line and vocabulary.
I had never heard of hybrid graphic novels before, but they are perfect for reluctant readers or those just beginning to read chapter books. They stretch kids to read longer sections of text, with frequent “breaks” of the graphic novel format mixed in. Here are some of our favorites to get you started!
Harriet Hamsterbone is not your average princess. She’d much rather be jousting or fighting ogrecats than doing needlepoint or looking ethereal. Her first set of adventures, Hamster Princess: Harriet the Invincible, earned several award nominations, and with good reason. This fractured fairy tale (a reimagining of Sleeping Beauty) is hilarious, and boys and girls alike will enjoy this spunky heroine’s escapades. Now Harriet returns in Hamster Princess: Of Mice and Magic
, a retelling of The Twelve Dancing Princesses – Hamster Princess style! My son has really enjoyed these books, and I have to admit laughing out loud as I was reading! Harriet is just so funny, and definitely the kind of hamster I would like to have on my side! (You can read more of my reaction to these books here).
After reading the Harriet the Hamster books, my son was eager for more from Ursula Vernon, so we started on the Danny Dragonbreath series and he loves it! Danny Dragonbreath was just an ordinary dragon who couldn’t even breathe fire – until one day he sets off on a series of adventures with his best friend Wendell. These books have Vernon’s trademark humor and fast paced storytelling that kids and adults will enjoy. I mean, who could resist books called Attack of the Ninja Frogs
or Curse of the Were-wiener
(about mutant hot dogs from the cafeteria)?
Now one lucky US reader will win a HUGE Ursula Vernon prize pack, including the first two Hamster Princess books, and advance copy of Hamster Princess: Ratpunzel, a copy of Castle Hangnail
, and the first five books in the Danny Dragonbreath series. Retail value approximately $75. Enter below for your chance to win this incredible prize pack!
