Encourage Creativity and Imagination: App Review
One of my goals with homeschooling my children is finding ways to encourage creativity and original thought. The Crayola Create and Play app from Crayola is a fun way to do just that! It has so many avenues for children to explore, fostering their imaginations and creative confidence. Below is my honest review of this educational app.
The app is a safe place for kids.
I found this to be very true! Because the coloring app is subscription-based, I don’t have to worry about my kids watching ads or running across anything inappropriate. I should also add that the subscription is quite affordable. For less than it costs to take your family to the movies, you can enjoy a full year of productive play in the Crayola Create and Play app!
The app is based on experiential learning through play.
The Crayola Create and Play app is very interactive and allows kids an incredible amount of leeway in how they make their creations. They have many options to choose from every step of the way, so that they really get to experiment with all different aspects of art.
The app teaches the arts and creativity.
Because the app is from Crayola, the OG of arts and crafts for children, it’s no surprise that this app for kids focuses on the arts and creativity. But I really wasn’t prepared for the range of activities available. It’s not just about coloring! (Although there is plenty of that, too!) Budding artists can draw, trace, paint, and doodle, and play around with adding stickers, stamps, and glitter to their artwork. They can even experiment with sculpting from molds. My kids especially enjoyed the pixel art and glow art. I was impressed that there are video lessons from professional artists included.
And when your kids are finished creating, each masterpiece is displayed in a virtual art gallery they can “stroll” through whenever they want.
The app teaches early elementary skills.
The Crayola Create and Play app was designed with the principles of child development in mind. Kids can practice their spelling and early math skills through educational games and fun activities. The puzzles and games are great for teaching logical thinking and problem solving skills. And don’t forget the color mixing lab! My son also loved watching behind-the-scenes videos about how crayons and silly putty are made. You can even give your kids a head start on coding with the exercises and activities included in the app.
The app celebrates diversity.
I was very happy to see that the app celebrates diversity by giving a prominent place to Crayola’s award-winning, skin tone-accurate colors and coloring pages.
The app is super fun!
There are so many art activities available in the app, that my kids never get bored with it! They have so much fun creating and playing games. (Don’t tell them the games are actually educational!)
One of their favorite features is getting to create and take care of pets, each of which has its own personality. There are also plants that they are tending that they get to observe as they grow. You can even use AR to watch them grow in the real world!
New content is added every month.
Even though it’s hard to imagine my kids ever getting bored with this app, I love that they can look forward to new content every month. Who knows what will be added next??
I highly recommend the Crayola Create and Play app from Crayola. Although the app is recommended for children ages 3 -8 years old, my 9 year old absolutely loves it, too! It is a wonderful way to encourage creativity and imagination and reinforces the principles of diversity and creative confidence that are the foundation of our homeschool.
