New Diverse Valentine Books for Kids
Enjoy these new diverse Valentine books with your kids!
How We Say I Love You is a beautiful reminder that not every culture (or every person) expresses love in the same way. Sometimes love is shown through our actions, such as when a little girl’s Ah Ma (grandma) sprinkles love into the noodles she makes for lunch. There are so many lovely touches to this #OwnVoices book. I love the Mandarin and Taiwanese Hokkien phrases throughout the text and the way it incorporates so many aspects of Chinese culture, such as the foods and the respect for elders. And there is even a hidden heart to find in each spread!
I Love You Every Day is a gorgeous new book about the meaning of love. It features diverse families and friends showing all the many ways we can demonstrate our love for each other. It helps kids notice all the everyday ways that love manifests itself in our lives. My favorite line describes how love creates a safe place where we can be ourselves. A wonderful message every child will love hearing.
Valenslime is a follow up to the wonderful Frankenslime. It also one of my daughter’s new favorite books! It is a sweet, funny look at the friendship between a young scientist (Victoria Franken) and the slime that she created. They are best friends, but will their friendship survive when Victoria makes new friends at school? Watch out for some joyful chaos when Victoria turns to science for a solution!
Love, Violet captures the sweet agony of that heady, terrifying moment of indecision before giving your crush a Valentine. But there is an extra dimension to this tender new book that makes the moment even more fearful for Violet – the person she loves is a girl, and Violet is worried about how she will react. This gentle book of friendship and first love sends a positive, reassuring message to children working up the courage to share their feelings.
How to Help a Cupid is part of the Magical Creatures and Crafts series. When Cupid gets tangled in a tree, a group of kids steps in to help! In the process, they learn ways to pass on love and kindness, such as making Valentine’s cards. A great way to help young readers think about the ways they can help Cupid by being kind and thinking of others. Includes easy card-making instructions, plus background information on Cupid and the origins of Valentine’s Day.
Ellie’s Lovely Idea is part of The Critter Club chapter book series, which follows a group of friends dedicated to helping animals. When Ellie learns that a local animal charity needs funds, she comes up with a creative way to raise money – singing telegrams for Valentine’s Day! Spreading joy and helping the charity raises all of their spirits, but Ellie can’t help but secretly wish someone would send her a singing telegram. A cute book about friendship and service, which acknowledges the complicated feelings kids experience when helping others.
