Children’s Books About Community
How do we teach children about being part of a community? As children expand their sense of “we” to include more people that live in their neighborhood, books can be a great way to teach them about the different people that make up a community as well as how we can interact with each other to create a deeper sense of community, where we respect and care for those around us. These lovely children’s books about community approach the topic in different ways, but all help children build a sense of belonging to a diverse group of people whom they encounter on a regular basis.

This mix-and-match board book introduces children to members of the community, like a baker, a writer, a scientist, a dancer, and an architect. But the fun doesn’t stop there! Children can mix and match the tops and bottoms of the pages to create hundreds of new character combinations! This interactive book helps build vocabulary and defies gender and racial stereotypes about who does which kinds of jobs. A fun way to introduce children to the different types of jobs that make up their community.

This charming book explains peace at the level children can understand, showing how peace looks when we are sitting quietly, or working together, or speaking up. Inspired by the teachings of Gandhi and Maria Montessori, the book takes seriously Gandhi’s statement that the work of building peace begins with the children. Through moments small and big, a group of diverse children learn to find peace within themselves and with each other, finding community among their peers and then among the wider world.

This interactive book blends learning to tell time with learning about members of your community. From a renowned Japanese artist, this cheerful book shows a cut-away of a building, with shops on the first floor and apartments above. At various times of day, we can see what each of the residents are doing. For example, at noon everyone is busy with lunch, including a pizza deliveryman. At 4 pm, Grandma is doing her yoga. A clock is featured prominently at the center of the building on each page, giving children a fun way to practice their skill and reinforce the association between the numbers on the clock and what they represent in the life of our community.

What do you do when dessert goes missing just before the rabbi arrives for shabbat dinner? Luckily, Sammy and Sol are on the case, determined to find Mamma’s missing babka! As they travel from house to house in search of their favorite dessert, neighbors offer their own favorite foods to help fill the empty space on their shabbat table. As the boys discover, even if you don’t always find what you are looking for, life is sweeter when everyone helps out! A fun read that not only delivers an important message but also showcases the diversity of Jewish communities, by featuring some of the diverse dishes popular around the world (with extra information about each at the back). I also love the diverse characters, including a female rabbi. And whatever happened to the babka? You’ll have to ask the dog! Includes a recipe for babka.

This warm story from award-winning author Traci Sorell and Caldecott Medalist Michaela Goade celebrates the joy of reconnecting to one’s heritage and community, following a new but nevertheless familiar path back home.

This picture book effectively pairs evocative illustrations with simple but powerful text about the ancient magic of a campfire. The circle of firelight creates an atmosphere where all belong, sharing food, music, and companionship. The unknown expanse of the sky and of the dark woods somehow makes the flicker of the campfire even brighter and the circle of new friends around it more welcoming. An ode to the eternal power of a campfire to bring people together.

When Art’s dad gets a cold, Art knows just how to help! All he needs is to make his dad some amazing, germ-fighting juice. The only ingredient they’re missing is ginger! As they scour their community for it, each neighbor they encounter has a different special ingredient to add to their juice. In the end, Art discovers that the real secret ingredient is community care, as neighbors come together to look after each other. Brought to life by the author’s own watercolor illustrations, this is a lovely book to help children appreciate the power of community. In fact, it was my inspiration to create a list of children’s books about community! Don’t miss my IG live interview with the author/illustrator.

This comic style book contains five short adventures about the animal residents of Villa Verde. There is a camping trip, an (almost) lost balloon at a fair, and the most delicious soup ever, made by the entire community. It has been compared to Richard Scarry’s Busytown books, as there is always something happening. Each little adventure has, if not exactly a lesson, something to make you think – either a moral or a gentle plot twist. Children will love these short interconnected comic stories. You never know what will happen next in Villa Verde!
