Books About Gardening and Outdoor Adventures
Warmer weather usually equals more time outside, as nature blossoms into a wonderland for children. In addition to lazy days in the sun, there are also so many lessons to be learned from caring for plants and exploring nature. These children’s books about gardening and outdoor adventures encourage children in these endeavors and give them the tools they will need to succeed. They contain great information for parents, too, in case you (like me) aren’t much of a green thumb yourself!

Depending on where you live, a house plant may be more practical than a garden (or maybe you have both!) This all-you-need-to-know guide teaches you all the basics to make sure your house plants thrive. I especially loved the section on choosing the right houseplant for you, based on factors like demands of care and whether they are suitable for pets. It also includes what to expect in different seasons and troubleshooting common problems. A great guide for anyone getting started!

This beautiful book will help children appreciate plants and learn to feel the rhythm of the Earth in their own heartbeat. I love how the grandmother help young Joy connect to her ancestors and their wisdom about how to use plants for medicine and more. Moreover, she learns to listen to her body for the lessons it knows, but which her brain hasn’t learned yet. A joyful read about mindfulness and reconnecting with ourselves through becoming more in harmony with nature.

This adorable read helps children understand the joys of growing your own food. Bella and Sam are given tomato seeds in kindergarten and take them home to grow as an assignment. Over time, they learn what it takes to nurture their seeds into mature plants, eventually enjoying their very own homegrown tomatoes. A great book to get kids curious about gardening and help them be more open-minded about giving those vegetables a try at the dinner table.

Of course, gardening is just one type of activity to do out in nature. Discover more through this lovely new book! It is wonderful for sparking kids’ interest in getting outdoors, exposing them to ideas like slacklining and geocaching, as well as climbing and animal watching. It also includes a section on being compassionate in the outdoors, by looking out for plants and animals and being aware of the needs of others in your group. As a parent, I appreciate that each activity explored in the book includes a section on safety, in addition to information about gear needed and fun science facts (like how a bike stays upright when you ride it). A fun boredom buster book for summer vacation!
