Father’s Day Books for Children
As Father’s Day approaches, I’m sharing wonderful new picture books that celebrate the bond between fathers and their children. The Father’s Day books below share the tenderness, love, and silliness that often characterize these relationships. They star a diverse group of fathers who show us the best of what fatherhood can be.

In this tender story, a girl and her father go on a special outing, just the two of them. In the early morning hours, before the city streets are filled with cars and buses, they ride horses, and the father teaches his daughter about being a cowboy. Being a cowboy is about respecting the horses and the community, which takes great pride in its cowboys. The joyous story is accompanied by stunning artwork, full of vibrant colors and lively images. A sweet father daughter story that also pays tribute to the legacy of Black cowboys.

Wary about a book that focuses on fathers and sons? No need to worry with this wonderful, forward-thinking book! The fathers here defy stereotypes with activities like baking and sewing. More importantly, they show compassion and kindness, teaching that true strength is gentle. Through their example they teach their sons to express their emotions, practice mindfulness, and build close, loving relationships. This is the book we need to teach children what masculinity can look like when it is centered, compassionate, and caring.

This adorably silly book shows the love between father and daughter, as they have a bedtime conversation full of endless questions from a child trying to delay going to sleep. But this is not your typical bedtime conversation. The girl’s questions are imaginative, but so are the father’s responses. Amazingly, the father never seems to tire of the queries and always has a perfectly calibrated response that is just as fantastical as the question. (What if you are stuck on a desert island, but the rescue boat is too small? I will shrink myself down until I can fit). This imagination-fueled Q&A is matched by whimsical illustrations that capture the nature of the pair’s creative journey together. Through it all, the father uses the back-and-forth to reassure his daughter that nothing can keep him from returning to her side.

I have already reviewed this wonderful book as part of my recent AAPI Heritage Month booklist, but I wanted to include it again here to highlight how refreshing it is to see a hands on stay-at-home dad at the center of a bedtime story, especially an Asian American dad. Throughout his “battle” with Boxer Baby, this dad handles the little one’s energy and defiance with love and creativity, until finally Baby is ready to sleep. A fun tribute to dads everywhere.
