Books for Fall: Autumn, Halloween, Day of the Dead
These children’s books for fall celebrate what makes autumn special, including Halloween and Day of the Dead.

This dreamy book is a beautiful edition of a poem by Alexander Posey, an early 20th century Muscogee poet, journalist, humorist, and editor. As a writer, he advocated for the rights of indigenous people, starting the first indigenous daily newspaper in 1901. Other works celebrated the beautiful landscape of Oklahoma, where the Muscogee Nation had been forced to relocate. His poem “Autumn” is here beautifully illustrated by Paige Pettibon, who incorporates her Indigenous and Black culture into her work. It imagines a young girl, as she marks the end of a golden summer as it slowly melts into autumn.

Perhaps, like me, you remember when The Nightmare Before Christmas movie came out, and you want to introduce it to your children, or perhaps, like so many, they have discovered it on their own. Either way, readers of all ages will enjoy this new pop-up book based on the classic movie. The sturdy board book introduces all of the beloved characters with rhyming text and unique pop-up figures that swivel to stick up above the book, even when closed. A great book to play with or to display.

Twins Flor and Roberto return in this colorful new picture book about combining fall traditions. The twins want to choose their Halloween costumes to pay tribute to their beloved dog Julio, who has passed away. Their older brother Luis also helps them remember Julio by making an altar for Day of the Dead. A gently told story about turning grief into joy through cherished traditions that celebrate good memories of those that have passed on. Includes instructions for making papel picado. A great book to learn about Day of the Dead, plus it gets an A+ for featuring such a loving older brother!

This fun early chapter book is a follow up to Welcome to Woofmore. The doggie hotel receives a special guest, a famous spooky writer who wants a break from all the scariness. He wants a rainbows and sunshine vacation! Yet when an article in the newspaper – excuse me, newspupper – claims that the Woofmore is haunted, other guests arrive wanting chills and thrills. Can the Woofmore keep all of their guests happy? More importantly, is the Woofmore actually haunted?? A fun read, especially for young dog lovers.
