Celebrate all of the wonderful things about winter from A to Z! This board book showcases the joy of chilly weather, like H for Hot Chocolate and S for Snow Day. It is a great way to remind kids that there is more to winter than just Christmas. With a focus on outdoor fun, it is a delightful way to show young readers that cold weather is no reason to hide indoors, when they can be enjoying nature, as in the Evergreens (E) and Owls (O), and sports, like Toboggans (T) and Nordic Skiing (N)!

This adorable book for young readers demonstrates that the best part of winter is enjoying it together. A fox family has fun playing in the snow together but also enjoys plenty of cozy cuddles back in their den. This book is a wonderful way to teach children the emotional benefits of the season, as it eases the way for mindfulness and compassion for others. Children will delight in the sweet illustrations, which feature sparkling snowflakes and stars.

As a parent, sometimes it’s hard to know how much to push my kids outside their comfort zone. Will the experience be worth it? Or will they come to resent it? This magical picture reminds us that, although it can be hard to go outside of what is comfortable and safe, the rewards are often breathtaking. A beautiful story of a young girl discovering the joy that art can bring, even when you have to brave the cold to witness it. The story is also a testament to the power of the ephemeral, which never really disappears from your heart.

What a gift to share with young readers this classic work by one of America’s great poets. Robert Frost’s words receive fresh life in this illustrated version, which imagines the story behind the narrator’s contemplations on that fateful evening. As he stands with his horse in the snow, visions of his past float around him, reminding him of the many moments that have brought him to this point, and how much more life he has ahead of him.

The courageous hero from The Voice in the Hollow, the mouse Hubert Cumberbun, returns in a new adventure. After shoveling Aunt Nanny Mouse’s path, Hubert heads for home through the wintry weather. But a mysterious willow tree blocks his path, offering in its branches items that have gone missing from his home. This fantastical tale of woodland creatures will ignite children’s imaginations about the wonders of the snowy landscape outdoors.

This is the latest installment in the wonderful Marya Khan series (see my review) from one of my favorite authors (see my interview). Marya has her winter break all planned out, but everything suddenly changes – for the worse! Although most kids would love to spend their break at a ski resort with friends, Marya is not a fan of cold weather, and she’s never been away from her family before. At least she’ll have her best friend, but her frenemy will be there as well. While Marya comes up with her own ideas of how to make the vacation worthwhile (like trying to catch a monster), in the end she discovers the value of spending time with friends – and even frenemies. A great book to get kids thinking about how appearances can be deceiving, and sometimes the person who seems to have it all may be missing what they need the most – a good friend.

Your little snow princess will love this fun new cookbook for kids! There are all kinds of kid-friendly recipes for frozen goodies, like “snow” covered cupcakes and icicle lollipops. I appreciate that, while there are plenty of sweet treats, there are also a few savory recipes, like snowball pasta. I love that the book is spiral bound, making it much easier to actually put to use in the kitchen! Families with special dietary needs will appreciate having recipes clearly marked as Gluten Free, Diary Free, vegetarian, and vegan, although easy swaps are also outlined in a note to parents for all other recipes.
